Meredith reviews The Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods is the most fun I have ever had watching a horror movie. Let me explain why this is a big deal.

I don't like horror movies. I don't watch them. When I am forced to watch something scary with my horror-loving husband, I watch through my fingers and sometimes have to cover my ears AND close my eyes.

In short, I am a total wimp.

So with October coming up at Reckless, I knew some scary movies were heading my way. When I picked Cabin in the Woods, I thought it was that movie with the non-twin Olsen sister who screams a lot on a dark room. I wasn't psyched, but I thought I could handle it. I was super excited when I picked up the movie and found out it was actually a spin on the usual “college kids gets murdered in a remote cabin” flick. This actually had the potential to be interesting! And good!

Then the movie started, and immediately I knew something was different. It was FUNNY. And CLEVER. I picked up the DVD case again, and saw that Cabin in the Woods was co-written and produced by Joss Whedon (Serenity, The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). SCORE!!

AND IT IS FANTASTIC. It is hilarious, it has a (small) conscious, but it is still a horror film. A horror film that even a wimp like me could handle, however. There was nothing that made me want to leave the room, though I did say, “Aw.......DAMMIT” five or six times. And there were those moments where it gets all quiet and you know something is going to make you jump. But that is when I start humming a jaunty little song to myself that goes something like this, “Gon-na die soon, gon-na get killed, gonna die a bad death, shit's goin' down.” I know......very soothing. But it works for me.

The script is great, the actors are great, the characters are great, the idea is great, the twist at the end is so-so, but I can't recommend Cabin in the Woods enough. Wimps like me will love it, and hard core horror fans will get a kick out of the winks it makes at the genre.
