Reckless Turns 20

A reflection of the last ten years, from Zoe Claire

I have been at Reckless for 10 years. I started here in July 2001. I was part of the crew who remodeled the old store . We had just finished the remodel on Thanksgiving Eve and went home feeling happy that we had finished in time for the Christmas season. The next morning, the first time Mike had closed the store in the 10 years he had been in business, I got a phone call from a friend asking if I had heard. Heard what?

I threw on my clothes and ran over to the store, which was gone, and watched as the video tapes splashed down the street in the water from the fire hoses. The rest of the day I got phone calls from my friends asking if Snappy Dragon was alright, and what was I going to do for work? The good news is that Snappy survived, the neighborhood took up a collection for the people who had been employed in the little strip mall where Reckless had been, and Mike kept me on to open the new store.

Since the fire, I have been part of the growth of the new Reckless. (which is now technically the same age Reckless) I have watched all the kids that have come in here with their parents, grow up and come to work for us. I have watched as formats change on through VHS to DVD to Blu-ray. I have watched the TV section take off and fill almost a whole store. I have watched all the Hobbits and Transformers and an old man with balloons get everyone so excited that even a boy wizard could not sneak in quietly. The Comic Book section is bursting at the seams and our Perfect List has been voted on 4 times.

When I first started working for Mike I gave him my "ten year notice". We both laughed. Now I am giving my next 10 year notice. And I hope to write another article in ten years.
