Re-Imagined

Did you know that Jane Austen penned 80's teen comedy Clueless? Or the the Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou? is a Homeric Odyssey?

Cinema has been adapting and re-adapting works almost as long as the form has existed, such as 1922's Nosferatu, made when the rights for Dracula couldn't be purchased.

Shakespeare, of course, has been re-imagined and adapted in several ways, from setting MacBeth in a 1970's burger shack (Scotland, PA) to Romeo court Juliet on a New York fire escape (West Side Story), and shooting King Lear as a sweeping epic in feudal Japan (Ran).

Even classic films are re-imagined and re-invented, like several of the films of Akira Kurosawa Already a great adapter of classic literature, and inspired by the westerns of John Ford, his Yojimbo was adapted to be Clint Eastwood's star-making picture A Fistfull of Dollars, which in turn brought about the 20's gangster epic Last Man Standing.

From singing, dancing Dickensian orphans to moving Kurtz from Africa to Viet Nam, they're all $2 for the month of March at Reckless Video.
