Welcoming the Summer

Renee Zellweger (Leatherheads, Empire Records) plays a high profile corporate consultant who gets sent to a blue collar Minnesota town in New In Town. Originally shunned by the locals as she works to restructure a local manufacturing plant, she eventually becomes part of the community, but this puts her in a difficult situation when the interest of her company threatens the jobs of her new neighbors. This romantic comedy also stars Harry Connick Jr. (Copycat, P.S. I Love You), Siobahn Fallon (Daddy Day Care, Baby Mama), and J.K. Simmons (Juno, Burn After Reading).

Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys, L.A. Confidential) returns as Jack Bauer in the seventh season of 24, placing him in Africa during a military coup. Season seven once again takes place over the course of one twenty-four hour period, set on the inauguration day of a new president (Cherry Jones: The Village, Cradle Will Rock) in Washington DC.

Kyra Sedgwick (Secondhand Lions, Singles) stars as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in the fourth season of The Closer, a member of the LAPD Major Crimes Division. The procedural episodically sets the division up against a series of high-profile murder cases.

A blend of Beowulf and Predator, Outlander is an action movie starring James Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, Deja Vu) as a hero from space who crash lands in Viking Norway in 709 A.D. Hunting a monster, he teams up with the local warriors to do battle with a super-human creature called the Moorwen. With Sophia Myles (Tristan + Isolde, Moonlight), Jack Huston (Factory Girl, Spartacus), and John Hurt (Heaven's Gate, V for Vendetta).

The two new anime releases this week are Mamoru Oshii's (Ghost in the Shell, Avalon) The Sky Crawlers, set in an alternative timeline, where a new member of a perpetually adolescent fighter squad begins to question the strange war he's fighting, along with his lack of memories about his strangely familiar surroundings, and the 4th disc of Tensai Okamura's (Cowboy Bebop, Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade) Darker Than Black series.
