Take a Chance
Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, The Hours) stars in the film adaption of the popular musical Mamma Mia!, with music based on popular ABBA songs. About to be married, her daughter (Amanda Seyfried: Mean Girls, Big Love) sends three wedding invitations to the men who could possibly be her father: an American Businessman (Pierce Brosnan: GoldenEye, The Matador), a Swedish adventurer (Stellan Skarsgaard: Ronin, King Arthur), and a British banker (Colin Firth: Love Actually, The English Patient). The musical brings three men to a Greek island, meeting the woman they loved 20 years ago, and a possible daughter they never knew.
The Mummy Keeps Returning
Brendan Fraser (Journey to the Center of the Earth) returns for the third installment in The Mummy adventure series in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Adventuring with his wife (Maria Bello: A History of Violence, The Cooler) and son, they encounter the mystery of the first emperor of China (Jet Li: Forbidden Kingdom, Hero). Known as the Dragon Emperor, he's been made immortal by a powerful magician (Michelle Yeoh: Fearless, Sunshine), the supernatural adventure leads the family has to stop the emperor from raising his army becoming an invincible force. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
Foreign, Indie, and Docs
The Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch directed the documentary Gunnin' for That #1 Spot. Centered around the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic game at Rucker Park in Harlem, the film follows the top 8 highschool basketball players in the country.
The German/Turkish film Edge of Heaven is a patient and steady film that travels between Turkey and Germany, and follows several
characters as they each face the death of a young woman in their own, individual way.
The Chinese ballet Bright Red Lanterns Hung High, written by acclaimed director Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, House of Flying Daggers), follows a 1920's young woman forced to become an old man's third concubine.
Campbell Scott (Big Night, The Spanish Prisoner) plays a man thrown out of his home by his moviestar wife in Crashing. This independent film has him crashing with two beautiful college students (Izabella Miko: Waiting, Coyote Ugly and Lizzy Caplan: Cloverfield, Mean Girls).
New this week to Reckless Video's TV New Release section are the 6th season of the Adult Swim comedy series Aqua Teen Hunger Force and the 2nd season of the supernatural drama Ghost Whisperer. We also have the HBO miniseries Generation Kill about a reporter's experiences with the US Marines during the first phase of the Iraq War, as well as the Ultimate collection of Mr. Bean. We also have the BBC program Will Shakespeare about Shakespeare's early years, featuring Deadwood's Ian McShane and A&E's Swingtown about a group of Chicago friends celebrating America's 200th anniversary.
Finally, we have several new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, from all eras of the shows 10-year run (with episodes featuring both Joel and Mike as host), including The Giant Gila Monster, Swamp Diamonds, Teen-Age Strangler, The Giant Spider Invasion, The Rebel Set, Secret Agent Super Dragon, The Starfighters, The Sidehackers, The Unearthly, The Atomic Brain, Shorts Volume 2, and Parts: The Clonus Horror, which shares the plot of the MST3k-able Michael Bay film, The Island.
