Family Event Movies

The DVDs of Journey to the Center of the Earth, this week's special effects extravaganza, can be played both as a normal DVD or as it appeared in theaters this summer: in 3-D. Brendan Fraser (The Quiet American, School Ties) stars a geologist who searches for a breakthrough left behind by his long lost brother. Taking his nephew (Josh Hutcherson: Firehouse Dog, RV) on the adventure, to follow the path of the boy's Jules Verne obsessed father. Along with their guide (Anita Briem: The Tudors) they find themselves trapped in a world within the world, filled with wonders, dangers, strange animals, and incredible sights. When the temperature starts to rise, they have to escape from the land at the center of the earth before they suffer the same fate as the last people trapped in the caves, and never see the sun again. On DVD and Blu-Ray.

Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Nim's Island) stars in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, as she tries to become a successful reporter. When her parents (Julia Ormond: Samilla's Sense of Snow, I Know Who Killed Me and Chris O'Donnell: Batman & Robin, Kinsey), struggling to get by during The Great Depression, have all their money stolen, they suspect one of the neighborhood homeless boys: Kit's new friend (Max Thieriot: Nancy Drew, The Astronaut Farmer)... but she sees the suspicions as a spectacular story that could save her family.

A spinoff from their popular Peter Pan, Disney has released the direct-to-video Tinkerbell, telling the story of the fairies who give nature its sparkle.

Smaller Films

Two documentaries are new this week: Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens chronicles the life and work of the legendary photographer who made her name in the early years of Rolling Stone magazine and later with Vanity Fair, with appearances from subjects ranging from Robert Downey Jr (In Dreams, Iron Man) to Mikhail Baryshnikov (Company Business, White Knights). Our other documentary this week is Billy the Kid, which follows a 15-year old teenager through his unique life in a small town in Maine, which won Best Documentary at the Edinburgh and Los Angeles Film Festivals.

Our new horror film this week is Zombie Strippers, set in President George W. Bush's 4th term as the leader of a crumbling America, where the government develops a virus that turns fallen soldiers into zombie super-soldiers. When the virus breaks out in Robert Englund's (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon) strip club and infects its star dancer (adult film star Jenna Jameson), she becomes a super-stripper. The rest of the girls have to decide weather not to be regular dancers or popular (and profitable) zombie strippers... though the customers in the private booths might never make it out alive.

Hank & Mike are Easter Bunnies, and even if Easter Bunnies aren't popular all year, they never get fired... until now. When a sleazy businessman (Chris Klein: Election, American Dreamz), convinces their boss (Joe Mantagna: Queens Logic, Redbelt) to start downsizing. What's left for fuzzy, pink, floppy-eared Hank & Mike? New jobs, drinking binges, and a shot to get even with the company that laid them off.

Love. Blood. Kryptonite. is the tale of a small time marijuana dealer trying to care for his little sister and drug addicted mother, but when he needs to make more money to support his family, he turns to selling heroin. The money is balanced by plenty of troubles, and the new venture fills his world with "Kryptonite."

Reckless Video's TV New Releases this week include the 6th season of the popular animated comedy Family Guy, as well as season 4 of the Showtime drama The L-Word. We also have the complete series of the 1973 BBC drama Edward the King and the complete anime series Witchblade. Finally, Reckless has brought in the sixth Looney Tunes collection, and the 20th anniversary collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000, featuring the laughably low quality films First Spaceship on Venus, Laserblast, Werewolf, and Future War.
