In Spanish and Not For Children
Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro's (The Devil's Backbone, Hellboy) Spanish Civil War tale, marries the perspective of his child protagonist into macabre fairytales, bringing a beautiful and disturbing movie that won this year's Oscar for cinematography, art direction, and make-up. Dealing with several perspectives and blurring the lines between death and immortality, The Fountain is
Darren Aronofsky's (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) newest picture, with Hugh Jackman (The Prestige, X-Men) struggling to keep his wife, Rachael Weisz (The Constant Gardener, About a Boy) alive... possibly forever. Breaking & Entering is the newest film by Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain, The English Patient), the story of an affair between Jude Law (Gattaca, Alfie) and Juliette Binoche (Chocolat, Blue), and another Oscar-winning director (and actor), Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful, Down By Law), brings us The Tiger & the Snow, a tale of romance and friendship set at the start of the Iraq War.
Of the smaller titles, Stomp the Yard is the underdog-uplift story of the group, where a street dancer finds his love of fraternity Stepping competitions, along with second PG sequel to The Sandlot, now in its third installment. Tears of the Black Tiger is the wildly over-the-top Thai action movie, full of Technicolor cowboy heroics, larger-than-life romance, painted sunsets, and rocket launcher battles, while Seraphim Falls is a more steady and serious western, with Liam Neeson (Rob Roy, Batman Begins) pursuing Pierce Brosnan (Goldeneye, The Matador), a man driven by revenge. The Thirst is our newest horror picture, making vampires from drug addicts, but we have two new mysteries: The Dead Girl brings together seemingly unrelated characters (including Toni Collette and James Franco) as they each bring clues about a young girl's death, and Billie Piper (Doctor Who) stars in the Masterpiece Theater mystery Ruby in the Smoke.
By popular demand, we've brought in the first season of the cult sci-fi series Babylon 5, as well as the second season of Pinky & the Brain (are you pondering what I'm pondering?). The next installment in Showtime's Masters of Horror series is Right to Die, from the director of Wrong Turn and starring Martin Donovan (Weeds, Simple Men), and the second disc of Trigun has been added to the new release Anime section, as well as the complete anime series FLCL.
Older films new to DVD include Beckett, the historical epic starring Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton; Princess Caraboo with Kevin Kline, Phoebe Cates, and John Lithgow; the adopted child documentary Daughter from Danang; and the Paul Newman private detective story The Drowning Pool.
